Director y productor británico. Después de dirigir algunas obras en Stratford-upon-Avon, se convirtió en director de la Royal Opera House,
Covent Garden (1947–50). Dirigió diversas innovadoras producciones de obras shakesperianas que causaron polémica. En 1962 fue nombrado codirector de la Royal Shakespeare Company y dirigió
El rey Lear (
1962) y
Sueño de una noche de verano (
1970), que fueron aclamadas por la crítica. Se consagró internacionalmente con una propuesta vanguardista para la obra
Marat/Sade (
1964) de Peter Weiss. Entre sus películas se cuentan
El señor de las moscas (
1962),
El rey Lear (
1969) y
Mahabharata (1989), cuya duración es de seis horas. En 1970 fundó, junto con Jean-Louis Barrault, el Centro internacional de investigación teatral.
